1. Look at other factors besides Lumen
Lumen is an important factor – you naturally want to have enough light when you ride your evening or night ride, but you must avoid focusing solely on the number of lumens when choosing bike lights for your MTB. There are a number of other factors that are important. You simply have to look at the totality of all the bicycle light’s specifications and hold it up against the needs you are looking to cover when buying your MTB light.
It can vary a lot from person to person, what you prefer. For example, if you are going to cycle very far, it is of course important that you have a good battery for your MTB light, or as we often recommend, that you acquire an extra battery for each of your lights, so that a battery change on the trip is possible.
Lumen is important to consider. It is the number of LEDs in the lamp and the quality of these LEDs that are decisive for the lumen with which the lamp can shine. LED emits a number of lumens, but the structure of the lamp itself also has an effect on how the light is sent out of the lamp, for example whether the light is diffused a lot or whether it is a more directly forward light cone.
How many lumens should a headlight have?
The headlight for the handlebar should basically have as powerful a light as possible, in some recommendations a minimum of 800 lumens is written, but again the quality of the light is crucial, including the LEDs in the light – our recommendation is MTB lights with min. 4 LEDs.
Another reason why you can’t just look at the number of lumens is that a bike light with 2000 lumens may well be perceived as shining much more powerfully than a bike light with 4000 lumens. It can do this because the cone of light or the dispersion of the light is of great importance to how powerful the bike light is experienced.
Do you want to be sure that the track is well lit with your light on the handlebars?
UltraLED MTB 10,000 is a reasonable purchase in terms of price. It has 10 LEDs, each delivering 1000 lumens. The set comes with a powerful battery that provides up to 2 hours of run time. The light also has a practical battery indicator that tells you when it has less than 30% left. UltraLED MTB 10,000 can also be purchased in a version where two batteries are included.
If you are looking for a slightly more high-end product, one of the following 3 lights is an option:
but it is also in a completely different price range than the UltraLED lights
2. Consider a light without a cable
It is clearly worth considering MTB lights with a built-in battery – that is, without an external battery, which must be mounted on the handlebars and connected to the light. There is no doubt that it is super practical. The challenge is that there are not very many lights on the market that have a battery capacity that allows for a longer bike ride with enough power on the battery and that shine as brightly as the MTB lights with an external battery.
A good choice could be the UltraLED MTB 200 , which delivers 800 lumens. It has a built-in battery with up to 4 hours of light. The light is primarily intended for mounting on the handlebars, but with a little practical skill can also be used as a headlamp / helmet lamp. We have several customers who use this light as a training light on a trip of 1-2 hours or simply buy it as a spare light if one of the main lights runs out of power.
The light is relatively new, but we have received good feedback from users.
Other options could be: Magicshine Allty 2000 or UltraLED Kejser bicycle light
3. Have a minimum of 2.5 hours of light with you
The battery is also something that is discussed a lot. The size of the battery, the lifetime of the battery or so-called runtime as well as the battery indicator are discussed. Running out of power in the middle of an MTB bike ride – and even in the middle of the night in the dark – is one of the worst things an MTB rider can imagine.
Make sure you have a minimum of 2.5 hours of light. This reduces the risk of the battery running dry during an MTB bike ride. You can even choose a MTB light that has a battery indicator that clearly shows you how much power is left. Some show it in an LED display, while others have, for example, a red and a green diode that indicates the current level.
It is therefore our recommendation that you always have an extra battery (for lights with an external battery), that you consider a lot whether light no. 2 would be a good idea and, alternatively, that you buy a spare light – then you will not be completely lost if the accident is out!
4. Choose a wireless remote control of the brightness
It can be a great relief and welcome help to choose a bicycle light with wireless remote control. This means that you will be able to adjust the brightness of your bike light during the bike ride – without having to let go of the handlebars. It is both practical and safer. However, it should be mentioned that there are not many lights on the market that have this functionality and that they are expensive to purchase.
5. Choose a smaller bicycle light for mounting on the handlebars
Although a lot has happened in terms of developing extremely good bike lights for MTB in recent years, weight is still a factor you have to take into account. MTB riding in the dark causes a lot of shaking. This means that if the light you choose is heavy, make sure the light is securely attached to your handlebars. When the bike light is firmly in place, you also prevent the bike light from scratching your expensive MTB.
It is basically not the case for our lights that they are too heavy, they are between a good 60 grams and up to approx. 270 grams for our UltraLED lights. An example of a very light light is the UltraLED MTB 2000 bicycle light, which is delivered incl. external battery. It is a small, compact bestseller that provides very good light on the road.
6. Make sure that the helmet light is securely attached
Here we just want to mention that you must make sure that your helmet light is mounted well and securely on your helmet or, if you use the included adjustable forehead bracket, that it is securely attached to the helmet, possibly. with some strips. You would like to make sure that your light does not shake too much while you are driving.
7. Consider how much you want to pay for your MTB light
One last thing, which for many is also one of the most important, is how much money you want to spend on the light. The price level is between approx. DKK 250 and up to just under DKK 2,000 – so it is possible to find lights for every taste and budget.
